Everybody everywhere is talking about Earth Day & the importance of living green! It’s so unbelievably fantastic to see, no? I’m personally so happy to see so many people taking steps to creating a greater, greener world for the future.
A part of this revolution, if you will, is lessening our dependence on potentially harmfull chemicals – which are in pretty much everything, from the food we eat to the stuff we put on our faces to the plastic we use to store our water in. This stuff gets everywhere, & if we don’t recycle it, it will always get back into the ground water. Gross!
Body + Soul has a great article that shows all the pretty horrible things in our moisturizers, creams, & other nonsense. Take the time to education yourself – it’s amazing to see what we use that’s been banned in other countries!
I’ve compiled a list of recipes that’ll allow you to swap the bad stuff for much better (for the Earth & for you!), natural ingredients. You probably have most of this stuff lying about the house!
8 ounces water
10 or so drops of your favorite essential oil (adjust as you see fit!)
Shake well, & spray liberally!
I use lavender essential oil, which I actually picked up at a craft store, but essential oil is available at any health store. Most even carry brands with combinations, so you won’t be stuck with a basic fragrance. This is such a better deal than $15 for a bottle full of chemicals from Bath & Body works, & works just as well. Now you’re hip & thrifty, too!
Another alternative is to add a bit of carrier oil (about 1/4 of the total mixture) to your bottle & spritz it on after a shower. You’ll be moisturized & smell amazing in one quick step!
Apple Cider Vinegar Toner:
1 cup water
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
Store in a small glass jar (like that old salsa jar you’ve had sitting in your fridge for awhile that probably needs tossed) someplace cool. Keep it in your fridge for an extra burst of energy!
2 cups Epsom salts or cane sugar
1 cup carrier oil
8 drops essential oil
Stir salt/sugar and carrier oil together in a bowl, then add essential oil. Scrub yourself up! You’ll want to store this in a jar with a tight seal, like a canning jar.
4 ounces water
6 drops of any combination of the following essential oils: cedarwood, eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, tea tree
Shake & spray! You’ll want to keep this in your pocket; unlike the scary product that is OFF!, you’ll need to spray this every 15 minutes or so depending upon the local bug population.
1/4 cup olive oil
1 cup raw sugar
1/2 cup used coffee grounds from a freshly brewed pot
Mix everything together in a bowl using a fork to blend thoroughly. Store in a big jar in your fridge for about a month. This is such an awesome scrub to use in the morning; very, very energizing.
Other fantastic ingredients & their uses…
Bananas: Soften sensitive skin by applying half a banana to clean, damp skin for fifteen minutes.
Honey: Use as a cleanser for oily skin – twice a day, warm a tablespoon or two in your fingers & massage into damp skin. Rinse after a few minutes.
Olive Oil: Use in place of lotion & moisturizer on damp skin after your daily shower.
Lemon Juice: Remove stains from your fingernails by swirling your fingers inside a lemon half for a few minutes each week.
Avocados: Moisturize your dry skin using half a mashed avacodo; apply in a thin layer & leave on for 15 minutes.
Green Tea Bags: Refresh tired & puffy eyes by saving your used tea bags (green, mint, white, or chamomile) in the refrigerator. Apply as needed!
Lemon Juice & Chamomile: Naturally lighten your hair by mixing these ingredients together & then reading in the sunshine!
